Kathy has had diverse opportunity for educational experiences in the ten years she has been photographing. Involvement in nature photographers.net, an online photography forum, provided her the opportunity to provide critique and have her work critiqued by other photographer. This was a time of exponential growth, and she received the weekly Editor’s Pick on several occasions, and was also one of the recipients of the Yearly Editor’s Pick Awards in 2003.
She has also taken classes at Grand Rapids Community College under the instruction of Jonathan Russell, where she specialized in darkroom and alternative processing. While at GRCC, she had her work selected for the Juried Student Art Exhibition. During her student years at GRCC, she also submitted work to Photographer’s Forum Magazine’s 25th Annual College Photography Contest, where she received the distinction of being selected as a finalist.
As digital photography came on the scene, Kathy expanded her horizons and embraced the new advances in technology. She has studied at Great Lakes Institute of Photography, taking a seminar under the instruction of Master Photographer Michael Timmons, where she learned innovative techniques for creating art using Photoshop and NIK and Topaz software. She has also studied at the Southwestern Michigan Council of Camera Clubs (SWMCCC) Summer Weekend and other various seminars. She is currently working towards her Masters of Photography credentials through Professional Photographers of America (PPA) and as a first time entrant in 2011, received three Merits at their international competition and had the distinction of having one of those images included in PPA’s traveling loan collection.
Kathy has had her work accepted at several local gallery exhibits. These include the GRCC Juried Student Art Exhibition, Grand Rapids Festival of the Arts Regional Arts competition, Celebration of the Arts spiritual exhibition at First United Methodist Church, Grand Rapids, Michigan, Riverfest Art Exhibit, Portland, Michigan, Shiawassee Art Center Members Exhibit, and Shiawassee Art Center 2011 Photography Competition, 2011 Michigan Photo Competition at Lowell Arts, Lowell, Michigan, and the MI Arts 2011 All Michigan All Media Visual Arts Competition, Holland, Michigan. In June, 2010, she received Miller Johnson Purchase Awards on two of her entries, and in June 2011m received County of Kent Purchase Awards on two entries at the Grand Rapids Festival of the Arts Regional Arts Competition.
